The following is an excerpt from a Paragon News Network interview with ‘Aristotle’, the creator and primary pilot of the Good William holographic drone:

PPN: It’s a drone. Why ‘Good William’. Why not FZ-117, or something like that?

Aristotle: I will confess, for a while I considered making him look like an airplane. ‘William’ because I wanted him to be relatable. It’s why he has a face, a human-sounding voice, the ability to smile, or scowl. ‘William’ is a common English name. ‘William’ could be your grocer, or your postman, or the kid who makes your sandwiches at the deli. ‘Good William’ because … it’s aspirational. I want people to see him out there and feel better, safer because he’s around. More, I want them to realize that we can all be good. We can’t all lift cars, or fly, or protect the world from hostile forces, but we can all be good – to ourselves, to our neighbors. We can all make each other feel like the world’s better because we’re in it. I want people to see him and remember they can do that.

PPN: Okay, that opens a door. You want him to be relatable, aspirational … and you made him a 6’4” blonde-haired blue-eyed light-skinned man. I think you can guess where I’m going with this. That’s not really the ‘kid from the local sandwich shop’ for most of the world.

Aristotle: Fair enough. I could tell you that his initial development and field testing took place in northwest Europe, but I’d rather make another point. I operate by a call sign, and haven’t ever showed my face in public. When people look up and see Good William, especially young people, I want them to think that could be them someday. Not because the drone looks like them, but because I might. William’s just the ‘airplane’. I’m the pilot. They could be me.

PPN: I guess that means I can toss out any questions I had about the person behind the curtain. So, when you say ‘they could be me’, does that mean you envision a fleet of drones someday, with the same capabilities?

Aristotle: No. It means that there will be room on the team for other pilots. After all, I just might retire someday. But – and here’s a teaser for the quantum physicists that might want to noodle out how Good William works – the drone itself has to be absolutely unique. Not just unique across the planet, but across the multiverse. If there were ever even two, the quantum interference would render them both inoperable. You’ll never see a pair of my drones, let alone a fleet.

PPN: So, what’s next for Good William? I understand he’s joined the Global Defense Force. Will he be saving the world?

Aristotle: Not saving the world, protecting it. Making sure that its people have the chance to save it themselves, if they want to.
