The doctors could never have sufficiently prepared Mrs. Malloy for her pregnancy. She was young -- she wanted a family more than anything -- but the news she got was life-changing: twins. It took a long time for her to make peace with all the responsibility thrust upon her. Her husband swore to her they had the capability to care for two children. He helped make her excited to take this next step. Then the universe decided to play an even sicker joke on the two of them.

After a routine check-up, there was cause for alarm. The twins, now revealed to be one boy and one girl, were not developing at the same rate. The male embryo was struggling to retain nutrition and grow. They were going to lose one of the babies -- and a situation like that could lead to further complications. The couple saw their chance at domestic bliss slipping away before their eyes, so when talk of 'experimental' treatments began, they were more than receptive.

After signing what seemed like pages of NDAs, members of clandestine government agencies and pharma conglomerates converged on Mrs. Malloy's hospital room. They assured her they were interested in saving her baby, but really they were probing the morbid limits of biohacking. Altering the genes of the male embryo created a runaway effect they couldn't imagine. As the pregnancy carried to late-term, the boy twin had overtaken the sister, its primitive mind developing some kind of parasitic quality.

Only one baby wound up being delivered. The male embryo had completely absorbed the female in the womb. The toll of carrying this immense psionic being to term had greatly sickened the mother as well -- and she passed away only an hour after the birth. Fearing what their interference had created, the g-men and other assorted suits absconded from the scene, leaving the psychic protege in the care of a woefully under-equipped single father.

Little did anyone know, the boy, Jack, still had a connection to his sister. In a strange, psychic reality of his own creation, split off from our own, she waited. As time went on and Jack gained a greater control over his psionic potential, he was able to visit her, speak to her, and eventually, change places with her. The first time she, Jill, revealed herself to the father she never knew, it shattered his mind and he was institutionalized.

Now, the twins have been on their own for most their lives. They continue to use their powers to amuse themselves, often in child-like ways. They have become known as Twofer in various circles of ill-repute. Most individuals they've come across find them unnerving, off-putting, and above all else, dangerous.

Psychics have trouble flying under the radar -- especially potent ones. The twins' liberal use of their powers prompted a number of sinister characters to pursue capturing them. Constantly on the run, Twofer knew they could never trust anyone not to stab them in the back. It took someone very charismatic to eventually bring their guard down. Drake found the two at a low point; they were both homeless, stowing away on ferries from port to port. The stranger offered them shelter and training in a place that he claimed was a home for wayward mutants. Though hesitant, the twins soon found themselves a part of the Dragon's Den.
