"My sister got a book of magic spells. I got a demon shoved in me and my body imprisoned in a suit of armor. Life isn't supposed to be fair." -- Jennifer Black

Abilities

Jennifer's abilities are tied an enchanted set of tech armor and gauntlets that contain a bound demon called The Witchcage. Through the Witchcage armor, Jennifer control fire and shadow stuff from the Netherworld. She can rain fire, burn enemies, mire them and show them horrific visions of the underworld. She can at times summon forth the demon's spirit to serve her directly as well. Through use and practice, Jennifer can use the heat and force of flame to propel her into the air and pilot the Witchcage with incredible precision.

Personality

Jennifer is a woman coming into herself daily. Closeted, afraid and picked on for her chest 'reactor' her whole teenaged life, she only found peace battling the scum of Paragon City. Eschewing the rules as a vigilante was her first act of rebellion. Once she embraced her sexuality and queerness, along with the support of her new found sisterhood, the real Jennifer has started to come forth, free of her demon's influence. Jennifer is brash, outspoken and has a sardonic wit shaped by years growing up poor in King's Row. Jennifer is a proud daughter of the Row and carries to this day a chip on her shoulder about the lack of funding, attention and hope in her home district. She's done a lot for the Row, but knows she could do more. Unlike her older sister, though, Jennifer is enjoying her own growth and having fun with her new friends, lovers and chosen family.

History

Jennifer's story starts with her older sister, Jessica. Jessica's abilities as a mage were expanded to an incredible degree when she obtained the 'Dreadmicadrian' at a young age. Obsessed with finding answers to her identity and with discovering more power, Jessica summoned the demon Maelfys. An 11 year old Jennifer, who saw the best of her older sister, snuck into the room in which Jessica was summoning the demon, only to have the demon break Jessica's control and possess Jennifer. Panicking, Jessica called an old ally, the engineer Katherine "Kitty" Maddoc to help her save her sister's life. Kitty was able to assemble a hasty suit of tech armor from spare Altek parts and Jessica was able to enchant the armor to bind the demon within her sister, severing her friendship with an aghast Kitty. None the less, Kitty continued to monitor the armor remotely, dreading the day that it failed.

Jessica never told her sister the truth about the armor. She told Jennifer as the younger sister lay in her bed recovering that her heart had been affected, that the armor would regulate her body heat and heartbeat. As time passed, the demon struggled for control. and the armor began to overheat. Kitty, unhappy still with supporting Jessica's lie, built Jennifer gauntlets that would expel excess heat, allowing Jennifer a degree of self-protection effectively arming Jennifer with flamethrowers. Jessica enchanted the gauntlets as well, allowing Jennifer to control the fire, and the headstrong younger Black daughter went to work beating up the would-be criminals of Paragon City.

Jennifer enjoyed combat incredibly, allowing herself to open up in the heat of battle, allowing her abilities to shine. Eventually, she caught the eye of the Sisterhood of Naughty Space Vixens, and met and bonded with Plasmawave after defeating a tide of Rikti invaders, earning her entry into the Vixens.

Joining the Vixens was an eye-opening experience for the young and eager crime-fighter. She quickly found friendships, and quickly came out as a lesbian, supported by the strong queer women she met there. Though Jessica watched with a wary eye, Jennifer recklessly threw herself into battle. Such a time nearly spelled her defeat until, on a mission, the fae mage Branwen du Morrigu saved her life and the two quickly became friends and lovers.

It was Branwen who spotted the truth about the Witchcage. Repeated, reckless use of her powers had the demon nearly able to escape its prison and consume Jennifer completely. With the sister nowhere in sight, and Jennifer at a crisis level, Branwen took charge and bound the demon within the armor itself, and in doing so, allowed Jennifer more control over Maelfys, whom in a fit of pique and dominance, Branwen renamed "Fluffy". Jennifer was finally freed of the armor, now able to summon and dismiss it on command, and gained the ability to summon forth "Fluffy"'s spirit to serve directly.

However, what Jennifer is not fully aware of is that fae gifts are not always what they seem. The control that Jennifer has over Maelfys is because of the control that Branwen has over her lover. At Branwen's command, Jennifer must transform into the knight The Witchcage, a complete bonding of her and Maelfys, bound to serve her fae mistress forever.
