Background

Origin

Lifespike I

Roger Lynch, the original Lifespike

Roger Lynch was born in Simcoe, a town located near Lake Erie within Southwestern Ontario. He was the first son of Lithuanian-born mother Viktorija Zujev and Canadian father. Tragically, Roger's father was killed in a car accident while he was seven, the trauma of which caused him to block out any memory of this time. Nonetheless, the pair managed to carry on. In middle school, Roger shed some of his otherwise quiet and reserved status when he indulged in the track and field team. This interest was carried on to high school, and assisted in helping him cope with the change of atmosphere that would otherwise instill great insecurity.

Despite whatever inhibitions he held onto, Roger was arguably one of the best members of the track and field team, excelling especially in long jump and mastering sprints of any length. Though unwanted, he was exposed to modest popularity after winning several province-wide competitions with rewards to show for it, and earned the appropriate nickname "Cheetah". Ignorant to himself, Roger was in fact a mutant, and had the misfortune to not recognize several opportunities when his ability would manifest in small but effective ways.

It wasn't until his final year that his mutation would fully manifest itself however. During an early morning track and field practice, Roger accidentally fell into another boy during a four-man sprint upon tripping on a jagged stone. The phenomenon caused his ability to absorb life-force activate during the contact and resulted in draining most of the other's life energy, causing him to collapse. Roger avoided exposure and consequence as the boy's "condition" was deemed the result of malnutrition, an issue that he possessed prior to the incident. Following, he decided to quit the team, becoming highly reserved during the last few months leading up to his graduation. In this short amount of time that he mustered the courage to reveal not only his strange ability, but his orientation to his mother's side of the family.

Roger later learned that the boy he had placed in a coma eventually died due to unknown complications. After much research and in light of Roger's situation, Viktorija decided to move them to Talos Island and utilize Paragon City's available services to help her son through controlling his powers. Roger decided to register as a "hero", especially after discovering new ways to use his power - his chosen code name being Lifespike. Though at first he found it difficult to balance this lifestyle with his schooling, he managed to overcome this doubt with the help of his newfound friends during his frequent visits to Pocket D.

Roger eased into the idea of having a companion and opened himself to that possibility, allowing him to explore a relationship with an Incubus (who helped him overcome his peladophobia). To further assist his newfound social life, he also decided to commit to correspondence courses in order to work or study on his own time. Roger soon randomly vanished without word to anyone - reappearing several months later as if nothing had happened in the first place. He returned with a successfully earned associate degree in health technology, though a more disturbing change was the fact that his own powers were altering his personality (and in more extreme cases physical appearance relating to regular life-force circulation).

Roger's career as Likespike continued with little to note, preferring the comfort of the friends and acquaintances he already established. On the evening of May 22nd 2012, Roger was assassinated in his own apartment by Vile Toxin on behalf of a mysterious leader of an anti-mutant movement based in King's Row. The same task also saw the demise of the heroes Polarflux and Norexia that same day. Upon learning of the death of her son, Viktorija permanently returned to Lithuania to start a new life once everything was finalized.

Lifespike II

Viktorija settled in Klaipėda for the sole reason of dealing with a secret she kept from her late son the entirety of his life; Roger had a half-brother he never met. Entangling herself with a married man named Jurijus Adamkus four years after Roger was born, together they had one son, Norman. Once Jurijus's wife found out about the affair, she agreed to raise Norman as if he was her very own on the condition that Jurijus never see Viktorjia again and pretended as if nothing happened. Viktorija successfully tracked down Jurijus but discovered that he was estranged from her now teenage son who was fending for himself, couch surfing and depending on friends for support. Once she located Norman, she took him into her own home in order for the two to catch up. Norman enlightened her about his difficult life; the woman who he thought was his biological mother dropping a bomb on his 13th birthday and leaving him with his father. Norman endured physical, mental and emotional abuse at his hands as a living resentment, but found solace in indulging his handful of interests. Viktorija felt obligated to explain everything about her first son and his identity as the hero Lifespike, which prompted Norman to reveal to her how he shared many capabilities with his older half-brother and developed similar powers; the first manifestation of such completely opposite of Roger's experience - while Roger injured someone else, Norman healed an injured stray animal.

He recognized his mother's desperation to make up for the mess she caused in the past and agreed to permanently move back with her to North America - eventually obtaining Canadian citizenship. Norman spent the majority of his time completing his education; polishing up his English tongue. He became obsessed with learning everything he could about Roger: getting every single newspaper, reading every online article and re-watching every piece of television footage surrounding Lifespike he could possibly locate, no matter how obscure or unpopular. His exhausting of resources soured some newfound friendships (including a talented hacker), but it was a price he willingly paid. He grew pale remaining in his room day and night in front of a computer screen, surrounded by hundreds of articles and scribbled boards scattered across his walls relating to Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. His work cried of desperation and insanity, but his findings were quite sane, and in fact very accurate. His knack for information gathering and investigation lead him to the specific name of an anti-mutant group previously based in Paragon City, and one of if not the leader "Winston Albatross". Norman easily convinced his mother that he needed to travel to Paragon City like his brother in order to better hone his powers.

She agreed and used her last connection to the city in order to find Norman and his boxes of stuff a temporary apartment to stay in. Norman immediately went to the PPD with his self-obtained evidence, pleading for them to use it. The begging fell on deaf ears even beyond the PPD, Norman being dismissed as 'A boy with too much time on his hands', 'someone who thinks they can do the job better than professionals, 'a civilian trying to play hero' everywhere it mattered the most. Norman became beyond frustrated, and felt that his only option was to continue on his agenda in the Rogue Isles. He "trained" himself at first by wearing a makeshift mask on the streets, learning how to push himself and his life-force powers against the threat of real danger and many painful lessons. He eventually came across an opportunity to take stolen valuables from the warehouse of amateur crooks, and soon gained a knack for playing selfish Robinhood. Taking valuables and money from criminals lead to funneling that money into hiring shady characters. An ex-military man worked with Norman in giving him a crash course of self-defense basics, and an expert computer technician and hacker taught Norman everything she knew for a very hefty price. So much time spent bettering himself added up and pumped his adrenaline for what it was all building up to. Norman honoured his brother by having the very same Lifespike costume made for himself.

When he believed he was ready to, at last, make his move, he tracked down Winston Albatross to Cap Au Diable. Norman viewed him as pathetic and resembling nothing of who he was in his prime, and the very few men Albatross ordered around were dispatched by Norman's superior powers; draining the very energy they needed to even bother fighting back. At last he came face to face with one of the men responsible for the death of not only his own brother, but so many others as well. Albatross took great delight in the reaction Norman gave him when he couldn't remember his loser brother because he went through so many 'dime-a-dozen B-listers'. Norman gave into his primal urge at that moment, and manifested his powers as he never had before. He sucked the life-force out of Albatross with such magnitude, that the resulting shock wave of released energy destroyed the interior of the building. In the aftermath Norman slowly walked to the criminal's lifeless body across the room, taking the trench coat from his body and slipping it onto himself.

"In your next life, remember his name. Remember MY name. Lifespike."

Norman took a month to collect himself and come to terms with killing another for the first time, but once he reached the point of self acceptance he continued to carry on the Lifespike legacy. Lifespike established himself as a private investigator and a general for-hire that refused to let law rule over reason, knowing that his own ethical compass would suffice - plus his mission still wasn't over. He needed to find the one directly responsible for pulling the trigger; he needed to find his brother's assassin himself. Lifespike continued to work throughout both Paragon City and the Isles, chasing his own ongoing agenda first and foremost while keeping himself busy along the way. Many names of persons of interest have made the list throughout his research, bribing and sleuthing. The name that came up more than thrice? Vile Toxin.

Timeline

Personality Profile

Lifespike has defined his very reputation on his quest for revenge upon those responsible for the death of his half-brother he never knew in life, the original Lifespike. While he doesn't mind being called a 'hero' as he does heroic deeds, he considers himself an 'actual' hero of the grey, much more true to a vigilante outlook, and makes his disdain for the less than perfect systems in place very clear. He looks out for himself and those close to him first and foremost, though does have plenty of sympathy and willingness to help those not so close to him if the circumstances allow. Lifespike has been identified as curious, nosy, suspicious, observant, conscientious, a critical thinker, chooses words tactfully and is nigh-relentless in his agendas. He is loyal when it's logical to be such, and through no circumstance remains loyal blindly.

Lifespike is willing to keep secrets and do what he deems necessary despite the repercussions of those finding out. He realizes that something much deeper is occurring with the development of his powers, but makes a conscious effort to take it in his stride. While some that learn of his capabilities come to fear him if only subconsciously due to his potential for snuffing out life so easily (though has only ever done so through self-defense and other necessities), Lifespike holds the magnitude of his power in a pocket within his mind, not wanting to let the existential crisis interfere with his well-being. Lifespike is, deceptively, quite an emotional person, and sometimes he is willing to give up the resistance to show that side of him to those he trusts. Beyond any professional veils, he is a protective and nurturing personality. He enjoys the company of animals and different kinds of people, and tries to remain as open-minded as possible to remain approachable and trustworthy (for both genuine and selfish reasons). Most of all, he has a great capacity to love.

Capabilities

Powers

Lifespike's mutant abilities allow him to manipulate life-force energy, the visual and application of such manifesting as bioelectricity the majority of the time.

ElectricControl_StunningAura.png Life-Force Absorption - Lifespike can absorb the life-force of other beings into himself between at a range or with direct contact; the latter levels capable of absorbing life-force energy at a much faster rate. The act of drawing life-force out of others weakens his targets to a varying degree depending on the amount of life-force absorbed; from decreased physical and mental activity, promoting illness, weakening the magnitude of powers and abilities, to causing loss of consciousness and eventual death. Lifespike is able to constantly replenish his own endurance by consistently draining life-force from others.

ElectricArmor_SelfBuffDefense.png Life-Force Containment - Lifespike's body functions like a "life-force battery", which can compound and retain a very large amount of energy at any given time. The most energy he stores within himself, the more his own physicality is increased: His strength, speed, agility, stamina, reflexes, senses, recovery, etc. can reach to peak possible human limits, and he is capable of regenerating physical injuries at an accelerated rate after actively absorbing energy. This makes his physical attributes, or potential, deceptively higher than expected. Heavy excess storage of life-force energy within his body eventually manifests as bright glowing bioelectric sparks and white light. The pinnacle limit of how much energy he can withhold has never been abused, though it is theorized that this would result in a 'bioelectric bomb' effect.

ElectricArmor_SelfBuffRecovery.png Life-Force Empowerment - The exact opposite of taking life-force from others, Lifespike more commonly prefers to transfer excess life-force into others, increasing their physical and mental capabilities to as far as peak humanly possible, promoting good health, healing/regenerating injuries and for those with special capabilities, enhancing the magnitude of their powers and abilities.

ElectricalAssault_LightningBolt.png Life-Force Projection - Lifespike has learned how to offensively project life-force energy as bioelectric blasts, arcs, waves and projectiles both loosely as shocks, or compounded into concussive forces.

LuminousAura_EssenceBoost.png Life-Force Perception - Lifespike can sense and perceive the varying amounts of life-force energy in living things. This enables him to roughly determine their state of being and mortality level, which is useful for triaging his power usage on those who need it the most. Incidentally, this also allows him to identify those who are 'undead' or 'unliving'.

ElectricalAssault_VoltaicSentinel.png Life-Force Constructs - The newest development of his mutant abilities, Lifespike is able to, through willpower and concentration, manipulate the bioelectric life-force energy into prolonged constructs, including but not limited to cages and what he refers to as 'ball life-forces'.

Abilities

MartialArts_ThunderKick.png Combat and Fitness - Though Lifespike prefers long-ranged combat more often than not, he has been coached and crashed coursed in basic unarmed combat techniques that utilize elements of Krav Maga and Judo. He maintains this knowledge in addition to keeping himself in good physical shape through regular fitness rituals, including running, stretching and muscle toning.

Weapons and Equipment

MunitionsMastery_BodyArmor.png Basic Protection - Lifespike's signature costume, including his modern trench coat, is woven with bullet-proof and fire resistant materials.

FortunataTeamwork_AuraOfConfusion.png Recon Devices - Lifespike commonly uses various reconnaissance bugs, tracers and recording devices to inconspicuously gather information for his own personal usage.

SonicBlast_Aim.png Communications Technology - Like most individuals in the game, Lifespike is commonly in possession of comlink systems, communicators, scanners and any other communications technology he deems necessary for various tasks.

Weaknesses and Limitations

PrimalForcesMasteryDominator_EnergyTransfer.png Life-Force Depletion - While Lifespike isn't storing excess life-force energy, his powers tap into his own life-force energy reserve. It is theorized that this extreme opposite end of his mutant power could easily result in his own demise.

DarkMiasma_DarkServant.png Revenge - His vengeful outlook has the potential to cloud his otherwise sound judgement.

Other Skills and Talents

PsionicMastery_WorldofConfusion.png Investigation - While Lifespike has no formal training in investigation and information gathering, he has demonstrated a natural talent for doing so, and utilizes everything at his disposal to accomplish his goals. He is capable of asking the right questions, and is very efficient in storing and organizing information.

MunitionsMastery_Surveillance.png Computing - Lifespike is very adept in the usage of computer technology, including but not limited to basic hacking, programming and IT capabilities.

Electrical_Mastery_Charged_Armor.png Gaming - Lifespike is a tryhard Moba gamer, though lately his lifestyle hasn't allowed too much free time.

SonicBlast_Medium.png Band Musician - Back in his country of birth Lifespike was a part of his school's brass band as well as repertoire as a trumpet player.

Trivia

  • Norman has made a conscious effort in nullifying his Lithuanian accent to sound completely 'North American'. It's assumed this is his way to blend within the crowd. In the same vain, he has zero contact with anyone outside of the city of heroes and villains in order to reduce the chances of his enemies discovering links to his family.
  • Though they don't have anything ICly to do with one another's stories, Cadavo can be considered the direct counterpart of Lifespike. While the latter is a mutant born into a normal, lower middle class family that had a relatively easy time discovering his own life-force related powers, the former is a mutant born into a rich criminal life that discovered his life-force related powers through tragedy/death. Lifespike has a darker vengeful side despite his heroic appearance, while Cadavo is a criminal that has a conscience caring side despite his dark appearance.
