Carter West was just an average man; an accountant for Crey Industries. One day while crunching numbers, Carter found out that Crey had been funneling too much money into a project titled, "The Super Soldier" and that Crey had not been reporting said money. Carter went and did what any good accountant would do; he asked questions. Although his superiors assured him that this was simply a mistake, Carter was not satisfied with the answers he had gotten. Believing that there was more to the situation than meets the eye, Carter decided to dig deeper into the matter.


One late night, Carter stayed at work to write up a full report on the incident when suddenly he was grabbed from behind with a rope around his neck and a gun to his head. Carter was taken to a secret underground lab where he tied onto a table and Crey's top scientists began to brutally experiment on him. The torture was unbearable and excruciating for Carter who remained trapped and experimented on for several days. After at least one week of the torture, Crey forcibly injected Carter against his will with a serum that resulted in drastic changes inside his body. Carter was in severe pain as he felt his whole body beginning to feel heavier than ever before. Eventually, Carter broke out of the trap and destroyed the lab, either killing or severely injuring many of the Crey workers who had tortured him. Carter soon escaped Crey's cruel clutches and discovered that the injection and the experimentation had given him near invulnerability, incredible strength, and enhanced his agility. Deciding to make good use of his new super powers, Carter donned a set of black and blue tights and began fighting crime in Paragon City as the hero, Mr. Mega.
