Annette Felderson was the odd one out in her family. Her father was a skilled inventor and master craftsman. Her mother was highly knowledgeable in the arcane arts. Her sister developed demonic powers when she was in her teens. Annette? She was just a normal girl. She grew up, went to college, got a degree in computer science, and took up a small-time IT job, all the while dreaming of what it would be like for her to join the ranks of the superheroes of Paragon.

Then, one dreary March morning, Annette inexplicably woke up with a catlike appearance and a painful awareness of just how many wireless signals were present in her apartment.

Too excited at the chance to become a hero to be distressed for long, Annette almost immediately signed up with Hero Corps, training her body and honing her newfound data-manipulation powers to become Petabyte, hero of justice and savior of Paragon City.

Powers and Abilities

Petabyte's primary powers come from a substance known as The Color Out of Space, an alien bacteria that occasionally arrives on Earth via meteorite impacts and can infest living matter. They typically travel in large colonies that look to the naked eye like a slime that glows with a color that, when observed directly, cannot be properly described; this effect is believed to be psionic in nature, as electronic devices and photographs are not affected, and show the substance to be some combination of cyan and magenta. For most people, a Color infection is practically guaranteed to be lethal, and often inflicts lasting brain damage; in some cases, however, the Color may instead cause the infected to manifest powers.

In Petabyte's case, she manifested electrokinetic powers, primarily a form of technopathy (the ability to talk to machines) based around reading and creating wireless signals. Over time, this transformed and improved; now, in addition to manipulating electronics, Petabyte has additionally gained the ability to create waves that can alter the perception of those around her, and she has even learned mind-reading and low-level psionic powers.

In addition to the above, Petabyte was found to have a mutant gene which allows her to transform herself and matter near her into energy and back again. Petabyte can use this to transport herself short distances by transforming herself into electromagnetic waves similar to a wireless signal, or store certain simple objects as data on various memory chips. After various mishaps when testing her powers, Petabyte limits the use of this ability to herself and various small, simple objects, as anything too large or complex will inevitably cause problems.

As her powers improved, Petabyte has additionally gained the power to craft images of living and nonliving things from pure energy with her psionic powers. These constructs are typically fairly short-lived, requiring large amounts of concentration for Petabyte to maintain for any period of time; she typically limits herself to indistinct forms when in combat to reduce the mental strain.

Perhaps most curiously, Petabyte's powers can each activate subconsciously while she is asleep. During this time, her powers are much more potent; records indicate that she is capable of bypassing power suppression fields and forming entire armies of superhuman simulacra in this state. Some members of the FBSA believe this to be a sign of a latent Incarnate power; further investigation in the matter is pending.

Personality

Petabyte is bold, brash, and excitable, constantly brimming with energy. She's a serial prankster and troublemaker; much of her combat style is centered around being disruptive and getting into her opponents' heads. She can often be seen charging into the fray, typically accompanied by the sound of some forgotten pop single from the early 2000's that achieved viral fame. She's quick to trust and incredibly casual in her demeanor, often dressing haphazardly and blurting out personal information and private matters without a second thought. Despite this, for those who do stick with her, she is incredibly loyal and more than willing to drop everything to help someone in need.

Petabyte enjoys surfing the internet, video games, tabletop RPGs, and anime. She dislikes loneliness and wet fur.
