Helena Martin was a freshman at Collegia Pasadena, when The Big One hit. She and her boyfriend, Dave Lewis, had just finished a burger dinner at the local Hearty’s. They were walking down the street, to the building his lab was in, for his studies in biochemistry. They hadn’t even gotten halfway down the block, when the ground started rolling violently. Helena stumbled and grabbed the trunk of one of the trees lining the street, while Dave was knocked completely off his feet, getting sent sprawling on his chest on the sidewalk.
Helena Martin was a freshman at Collegia Pasadena, when The Big One (earthquake) hit. As she was trying to pull a victim out of a fallen building, an aftershock struck, opening a hole directly under her. That hole dropped her into a transdimensional void, where she was physically altered, then dropped into a different reality, entirely.

With the ground still heaving, Dave rolled towards Helena, away from the dry cleaners’ plate glass windows, rattling dangerously in their frames. As he reached a parking meter next to the tree, the windows shattered, sending shards both into the building and towards the street. Several larger shards struck the pair, but they scarcely noticed, at the time. Masonry was falling from all of the nearby buildings, windows shattering, people crying out, cars brakes squealing as their drivers fought for control.
Helena was then falling, backwards, and impacted on something hard, knocking her unconscious. That "something hard" turned out to be the car belonging to a Vanguard administrative supervisor. Thankfully, it was parked and empty when the impact occurred.

Helena could only watch in horror as she saw the ceiling in the dry cleaners collapse, as the street was plunged into darkness when the local power grid failed. She didn’t know how long the rolling continued; it felt like hours, but it was only a matter of minutes. She clung to the tree, praying that it wouldn’t fall over, while nearby buildings collapsed, cars rocked in their parking spots on the street.
She woke up in the hospital, in Atlas Park, yet another newbie super. Unlike most capes, this one was functionally blind, only being able to distinguish light and dark, and whatever color (in the visible spectrum) was pointed at her eyes. Her eyes were very disturbing, being an iridescent black, with a sapphire blue glow deep within, farther back than the human skull should allow. It was akin to looking into another dimension.

And then, there was silence.
After thorough testing, it was found that Helena possessed a range of growing psychic abilities: telepathy (receptive and projective), telempathy (receptive and projective), psychic shields, the ability to speak and understand any language on Earth (that has had at least a dozen people/beings speak it within Earth's atmosphere), an increased healing factor, an apparent immunity to the effects of alcohol (but she has normal reactions to other substances (ingested, inhaled, injected, absorbed), and a sparkling red force field that might just be the visible manifestation of her psychic defenses. Helena's blood type was classified as "C," as it was clearly human-type blood, but the antigens did not match normal human hemoglobin types, yet had no impact with Type-O blood. Ms. Martin can see through others' eyes by having physical contact with them, and the person's permission to do so. A limitation with her psychic abilities is that she is incapable of saying an untruth. She might prevaricate or mislead, but her words will be the absolute truth.

And then, there wasn’t.

Groans of the injured, the creaking of broken buildings, car alarms, the rattle of falling debris. A car in the street had slid to an angle before stopping, the headlights shining into the wreckage of the dry cleaners. Helena saw a dust-covered arm, the hand trying to push rubble off. The debris shifting as the person started to pull themselves out.

“There’s somebody in there! Dave, call 9-1-1!” she called out, and started gingerly climbing over the rubble to the survivor. She was reaching for that hand, when the aftershock hit.

But it didn’t feel like any earthquake Helena had been in before. There was a sound like a discordant chord being played on a grand church’s pipe organ, then a bright light, below her and to her left. She turned to the light, confused, and felt the world drop out from under her.

She was surrounded by both light and darkness, and not falling, but not floating, either. There was a roar of sound, but also deafening silence at the same time. Helena couldn’t get a breath, but she was screaming. She could move, but there was nothing to move against, or towards, or anything. But Helena could feel she was moving somewhere, somehow.

Helena had no idea how long she was in that place that wasn’t a place, before that strange pipe organ sound engulfed her once again. She was then falling, backwards, and impacted on something hard, knocking her unconscious. That "something hard" turned out to be the car belonging to a Vanguard administrative supervisor. Thankfully, it was parked and empty when the impact occurred.

Helena was then falling, backwards, and impacted on something hard, knocking her unconscious. That "something hard" turned out to be the car belonging to a Vanguard administrative supervisor. Thankfully, it was parked and empty when the impact occurred.

Helena Martin was not traded or duplicated, as the boy who would have grown up to be her father had died during an alien invasion in Los Angeles in 1977, and the woman who would have been her mother married someone else and is currently living in Bakersfield with her own, completely different family.

In normal clothes, Helena uses a folding white cane to help her move around. As Vox Veritas, she depends heavily on her mental senses, and is learning how better to use her normal, physical senses.

After staying in Transient Housing in Atlas Park, Helena moved into an apartment on Orsenigo Blvd, in Salamanca, near the Croatoa branch of the University. She is employed by the Midnight Group, a branch of the Midnight Club, translating ancient documents (books, scrolls, tablets) into English, with the aid of interns from the University's Department of Mystical Studies to act as her eyes.

As Helena grew more comfortable in the use of her abilities, and they expanded, she attracted the attention of time-dragons, who collectively call themselves "The Swarm," not to be confused with the Devouring Earth swarms. With their help, she has grown in mastery of her abilities.
