Aqua was a wave; they were happy being a wave, a part of a larger whole of the ocean, ebbing and flowing with the tides and finding all kinds of new things to get caught up in. They had no thoughts, no real dreams, they existed as a mindless part of a bigger whole. People would come through on ships — fishing ships, shipping ship, party ship, sometimes even pirate ships — but Aqua would just crash against the hulls of the ships, unawares of what was going on inside, and even more unawares the amount of debris they would just let fall into them and the rest of the ocean.

A particularly curious ship — at least to those who were not waves — listed across their part of the ocean one day, its hold thrumming with power that could be felt in tremors through the waves and a glow that permeated the night sky. The fish were in a tizzy, an octopus was beating its many arms against the bow of the ship, and things with far more agency than Aqua had were doing their best to break through to the magic inside. It was hours of the shrieks of sea beasts and humans alike as the ship was accosted from all sides; even the sky opened up and started to rain down terror upon the boat itself as it was ripped apart by everything nature had to offer and its contents were spilled like a piñata across the sea, sinking quickly through its depths.

Aqua, once again as thoughtless as a wave can be and totally oblivious to their surroundings, managed to get caught up with a conch shell. Not really a new development or special in any way, and they merely flowed with the shell in their wake; it took hours for Aqua to change — for the magic of the shell to fully work through them — and give them form. Not just the form of the sea, but the form of a human; they were given life, shape, thoughts (however trivial), and still had all the trappings they'd had before as sea water. But now...? Now they could explore places they'd never been before. Now they could walk on land and do good across the world. Now Aqua was actually Aqua, a hero with a head full of water and a new heart formed of conch and magic.
